Nitrous oxide sedation & general anaesthesia
– anxiety-free dental treatment

For anxious patients — children and adults alike — we offer treatment under nitrous oxide sedation, twilight sedation, or full general anaesthesia.

Nitrous oxide (nitrous oxide/“laughing gas”) has been used successfully for many years in countries such as the USA, the UK, and Scandinavia. Its use is also becoming increasingly common again in Germany and Switzerland. We offer nitrous oxide sedation as an additional service.

“The patient inhales a precisely dosed mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide through a nasal mask. Feelings of anxiety and pain are significantly reduced,” explains dentist and implantologist Boris Nikas. “Yet the patient remains responsive throughout the entire treatment.”

Nitrous oxide is ideal for anyone who associates dental treatment with strong negative emotions.
Another advantage is the exact dose control: the effect lasts only as long as needed and fades quickly — allowing the patient to return to normal activities, including driving, shortly after treatment.

After a short induction phase, patients experience a pleasant, relaxed sensation and feel more detached from the procedure. Even the use of local anaesthesia by injection becomes much easier to tolerate.

From short appointments to more extensive procedures, nitrous oxide sedation is suitable for any treatment duration.

Less anxiety & stress

Nitrous oxide significantly reduces anxiety and creates a calm, pleasant feeling.

Fully responsive

You remain awake and responsive throughout nitrous oxide sedation.

Fast recovery

Shortly after treatment, you are fully alert again and safe to drive.

Safe general anaesthesia

If needed, an experienced anaesthesia team accompanies you throughout the entire procedure.

The twilight sedation (also called conscious sedation or “analgosedation”) is a form of sedated treatment. Medication such as midazolam brings the patient into a relaxed, sleepy state — somewhere between wakefulness and unconsciousness.

Features of twilight sedation:

– You remain responsive but perceive very little of the procedure.
– Anxiety, stress, and pain perception are significantly reduced.
– Breathing remains independent — no ventilation required.
– Often combined with local anaesthesia.
– A short recovery period is usually necessary afterwards, often with an accompanying person.

With clear protocols and modern technology, nitrous oxide sedation is extremely safe. From placing the nasal mask to individually adjusting oxygen levels, our experienced team guides you through each step.

This allows even longer or more complex treatments to take place in a relaxed atmosphere — for greater confidence and comfort at the dentist.

Who is it suitable for?

– Patients with severe dental anxiety
– Longer procedures
– Strong gag reflex or high nervousness

If full general anaesthesia is required, an experienced team of anaesthetists comes to our clinic and performs the anaesthesia on-site. In most cases, you can leave the clinic and go home shortly after the procedure.
